The St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral Youth Association is a program within the Hellenic Community of Miami Florida organized by Presvytera Toula Mekras in 1946. In 1960 Presvytera Toula Mekras with the help of many parents of the GOYAN’s sewed handmade authentic costumes for greater than 100 members EVZONE DRUM AND BUGLE CORP. AND GREEK DANCING TROUPE that made dozens of performances including in New York City in 1966 on the Celebration of Greek Independence Day Parade.
The goal of the program is to expose children to their Greek Orthodox faith and Culture, meet other children from the same background, promote athleticism which goes back to the Olympic roots and to keep kids out of trouble and other dangers they might face. The program is for children aged 8 to 18 years old.
Once again, the St. Sophia GOYA, along with all South Florida District GOYAs, will be participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring event.
Souper Bowl of Caring works to mobilize those looking to fight hunger and poverty around the time of the Super Bowl football game on Sunday, February 2nd.
As part of the effort, a collection will be taken on Sunday with the proceeds
going towards the International Orthodox Christian Charities to help fight hunger and assist refugees throughout the world. Please join us in this most important effort.
