Poseidon South Beach

New, Greek, and Wonderful It ain’t easy to open an eatery on South Beach, much less on Washington Avenue, a whirl of wandering tourists and traipsing whack jobs. But despite common misconceptions, it is possible to maintain a level of culinary integrity while setting up shop in the Wild West (South, whatever). Just ask the Pyliotis brothers, the duo behind Poseidon, a newly launched Greek bistro. They’re also behind the nearby Zesto Pizza & Subs (a favorite SoBe haunt for the late-night set). But for the siblings, Poseidon is a whole new world, one of classic Greek dishes, unique ingredients, and local patrons.

Poseidon brings a taste of the Greek Isles to South Beach

The goods: Poseidon brings a taste of the Greek isles to Washington Avenue.

Ambience: Located in the former Vinyl and Kai space, Poseidon sports bright white tables, beige banquettes, a patio, Mediterranean music and bright lighting.

The grub: Traditional Greek. Chef Demetrios Pyliots oversees a moderately priced menu: Starters $6-$14, mains $15-$28 Dinner begins with feta-flecked bruschetta. Appetizers include curls of char-grilled octopus, chunks of fresh tomato, feta and onions, rice-stuffed grape leaves and traditional dips like tarama (cod roe), tzatziki (yogurt-cucumber) and melitzanosalata (smoked eggplant) plus mashed feta with hot Japanese green peppers.

Miami Travel Girl

Three passes down Washington Avenue in the rain, unspecified hunger, and the inability to choose a date night spot led me to Poseidon Greek Restaurant & Outdoor Lounge located at 1131 Washington Ave. Miami Beach, FL 33139. The restaurant’s electrified, pale blue sign glowed like a lighthouse guiding every passerby into its fold. As much as I love outdoor seating; however, the constant rain showers did not allow me to enjoy this pleasure. Instead, I opted to sit inside, near a large picture window facing the street.

Let’s play a game.

It’s called Moussaka, Ouzo and Cougars. (Okay, we’re still work shopping the name.)

The goal: collect gratuitous quantities of each.

The easiest way to win: dinner at Poseidon, a new Hellenic retreat where you’ll indulge in all sorts of Greek delicacies (to be clear, we’re mostly talking about roast lamb), now open in the former Vinyl & Kai space in South Beach.

Since the Vinyl & Kai days, this place has gotten quite the makeover. The bright-red walls have been painted a cerulean blue. The black banquettes and tables are now soothing shades of cream. And the pulsating strobe lights have been replaced by the soft glow of candlelit steel lanterns. Too bad. Not really

World Red Eye

Miami Beach, FL – April 17, 2013 – Washington Avenue has just gotten a new taste of Greek cuisine with Poseidon. Last week’s grand opening had over 250 guests come out to see the new restaurant and outdoor lounge on the busy strip. There was a live electric violinist, DJ, and in true Mediterranean fashion, a belly dancer to make for an exotic event. Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower officially inaugurated Poseidon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony as everyone got to sample the authentic Greek menu that brings a modern twist.

Eater

Poseidon, Miami Beach’s new Greek cuisine spot, opened up less than a month ago, but they’ve really hit the ground running since. The two brothers who opened up the eatery, Demetrios Pyliotis and Vasilis Pyliotis, with plans to deliver modern twists on classic Greek dishes seem to be living up to their expectations. Here’s what people are saying about Poseidon:

Fantastic News: One reviewer on TripAdvisor says she “absolutely loved it”. The dishes she ordered, like the Calamarakia, Shrimp Saganaki and Turopita Cheese Pie, were “perfectly prepared and delicious”. Overall, “a great dining experience” and price wise: “the portions are pretty big, and are a steal for the price”.

Run Down

Every now and then, Washington Avenue surprises us. And we’re not talkin’ about Club Madonna. We’re surprised in a good way at the new Poseidon Restaurant and Outdoor Lounge.

Like for Odysseus, your long journey home through treacherous South Beach congestion requires a reward, and this temple to all things Greek has you covered. The outdoor terrace’s pristine nautical theme will transport you to, say, Santorini. Or Mykonos. Hell, at 6p, we’d even take some graffiti’d alley in Athens.
